Why You Need Armed Or Unarmed Security At Your Housing Estate/Complex

Why You Need Armed Or Unarmed Security At Your Housing Estate or Complex

Why You Need Armed Or Unarmed Security At Your Housing Estate/Complex

With crime rates being at an all time high in South Africa, having Security at your Housing Estate/Complex is non-negotiable. The only question that remains is whether to opt for Armed or Unarmed Security.

Why You Need Armed Or Unarmed Security At Your Housing Estate/Complex

Housing Estates/Complexes have been thought to be a more secure option for home owners, but in recent years, the number of burglaries and theft of vehicles, has increased. This has raised the concern of engaging with Security Companies to assist in supplying these Housing Estates/Complexes with Professional Security Services, including biometric systems.

Consider Armed Guards In The Following Circumstances

In some settings, armed guards are the best fit for the security needs of the facility or event. The decision to use armed personnel should be made with careful consideration and a high regard for safety and security.

  • Use Armed Guards When Priceless Valuables Are Involved

There are some treasures that require the highest level of safekeeping. If your goal in hiring security guards is to protect valuables of great worth, such as priceless jewels or art, you may want to consider armed guards.

The presence of security guards who carry lethal weapons may discourage attempts at theft or other crimes. If someone does attempt to vandalize or steal the valuables, an armed guard can match the weapons of the criminals, who may well be armed themselves.

  • Use Armed Guards When Violent Situations Often Occur Or Are Likely To Occur

Some settings are more prone to violent outbreaks than others.

One example is establishments in high-crime areas, particularly ones that operate during late-night hours, such as bars and nightclubs. Another example is hospital emergency rooms, especially those that frequently treat those involved in gang fights or other criminal activities.

When determining whether to put armed guards in your violence-prone location, consider whether the presence of armed guards will serve to diffuse tension and safeguard against violence or whether the sight of a gun may provoke further escalation.

There is no hard-and-fast rule for this; you must evaluate the specifics of your situation to determine what is best.

  • Use Armed Guards When The Guards Will Be Behind The Scenes

Although armed security guards may put business owners at ease, knowing that their goods and property are securely protected, they can also set clients and customers on edge.

Seeing an armed guard may introduce the thought that the business is not a safe place to be, so the security team must carry guns in order to protect it.

Therefore, armed guards are often best used in behind-the-scenes roles, rather than directly in the public’s eye. They can quickly appear on the scene when needed, but until then, they are able to remain out of sight of the general public.

Consider Unarmed Guards In The Following Circumstances

Although some situations warrant the use of armed security personnel, many settings can be kept secure without the use of lethal force. Business owners and event organizers can rest assured that unarmed guards provide sufficient security in most scenarios.

  • Use Unarmed Guards When You Want To Save Money

As a general rule, armed guards cost more than unarmed ones. For those on a limited budget, this may automatically make unarmed guards the most logical choice.

Beyond the increased hourly fee for armed guards, there may also be other costs that come with hiring armed security. For example, if you keep an armed detail on your premises, your insurance costs may go up.

  • Use Unarmed Guards When You Want To Avoid Liability

Property owners may be held liable for the actions of the security guards on their grounds. If an armed guard shoots someone and causes injury or death, you could be held responsible.

If you are not comfortable with this level of liability, consider hiring unarmed security, which can use non-lethal weapons to deter crime and violence. These may include tasers, batons and sprays: effective without being deadly.

If you do choose to accept the responsibility that comes with hiring armed guards, ensure they are licensed and have met at least the minimum requirements for armed security in your state.

  • Use Unarmed Guards If Access To Law Enforcement Is Quick

If police officers can be quickly deployed to your site, you may not need armed guards. Instead, set your unarmed security team up with communications tools with which they can get in touch with police.

For settings in which multiple unarmed security guards are on site, they should also have an easy way to communicate with one another, such as two-way radios.

This allows the guards to call for on-site backup in emergency situations. With backup, guards may be able to diffuse the tension on their own or maintain the situation until police arrive.

How To Make The Final Decision – Armed Vs Unarmed Security

So how can you decide which type of security guards are best for your situation? There are circumstances that will be best served by armed guards, while in other settings unarmed guards are best. You will have to weigh the various factors for your particular situation when making a decision.

You don’t have to make this decision alone, however. The security company you hire can be a valuable source of information. Ask their experts for advice on whether armed or unarmed guards are best for your setting.

By evaluating the specific factors at play at your event or facility and considering the expert input of a security firm, you can make an informed, reliable decision about the best approach for your needs.

Five Easy Ways to Improve Building Security in South Africa

Improve Building Security in South Africa

Five Easy Ways to Improve Building Security in South Africa

More than ever, South Africans are aware of the need to protect their businesses. There is a huge responsibility to protect the occupants and assets inside of your building from all kinds of aggressors including criminals, disgruntled employees, vandals and intruders. There are many ways to improve the safety of your building.

  • Limit Entrance Points

One easy and proven way to improve the security of your building is by limiting the amount of entrances there are. Having a central entrance to come in and leave through is a deterrent for many trespassers because it means that it could be easier to get caught. If more than one entrance is necessary, a great feature to have are automatic locks installed on the doors that lock automatically when someone leaves.

  • Regular Gate/Door Maintenance

In some instances, keeping your building secure could be as easy as keeping it maintained. Be sure to continually check the entrance doors for any damage or faulty hardware. Pay special attention to the locks, latches and hinges. Installing face plates on you doors can also help prevent them from being jimmied open. Inspect all exterior lighting and replace as needed. Well-lit areas are a great deterrent to trespassers.

  • Implement Visitor Logs

Having each visitor log in is another way to enhance your building security. Security logs can either be done through paper log books or through newer technology. Many businesses today are implementing digital systems for guests to check in with. A digital visitor log system provides an accurate, and easier to access, audit trail of all visitors. When businesses use paper for logging visitors, it is easier for information to be illegible and even falsified. There are many benefits of having an electronic visitor management system. Some benefits include added security, accuracy of visitor information and ease of reporting in case of evacuations and police involvement.

  • Consider Gated Parking

Limiting access to the parking area and building is another way to improve building security. Not only do they reduce unauthorized entry of vehicles, they also limit foot traffic as well. For many businesses, reducing traffic is a big step in securing the premises and deterring criminal activity.

  • Hire Security Guards

One of the best options a business can do to ensure their building is secure is through hiring security guards. There are many benefits to hiring security officers for your business and the following are some of those benefits:

Sense of Security– Having a security guard can offer peace of mind and a sense of security to the owner of the business, its employees and customers.

Prevention– A security guard is proven to be a great crime deterrent. Thieves will think twice before targeting a business that has a guard.

Customer Service– Security officers are also great as customer service agents. They can keep control of a central area and work with customers and clients as well as maintain the security of the area.

Handling of Crime– Security officers are highly trained to observe and report any type of criminal activity. They can be in charge of making sure the police are contacted immediately and are experts at taking down details of any incidents that occur.

Monitoring– Not all guards spend their days patrolling the property of the business. Some are able to monitor video surveillance cameras, check for contraband, restrict areas when needed and also check credentials.

When it comes to the security of your building, it is best not to leave it up to chance. Take away as many of the variables as possible through following the tips outlined above. Make certain that you have made every effort to keep your property, employees, and visitors protected.

If security is of any concern to you, you should consider having your security measures evaluated by a reputable company. Mantis Security, we offer free security consultations for businesses. We will take the time to meet with you to discuss your security needs, draft a plan of action that suits your needs and budgets – and give you that priceless peace of mind.

Home Invasion Prevention Products – Best Ways to Prevent Home Intrusion

Home Invasion Prevention Products

Home Invasion Prevention Products – Best Ways to Prevent Home Intrusion

Keeping your home and family safe from an intruder takes a lot more than most would imagine. Home invasions are the kind of statistically high-probability, high-consequence nightmare that is difficult to guard against without seeming and feeling like a hopelessly paranoid person. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared.

Mantis Security is here to safeguard your home, your business – but most importantly – what matters to you.

How to Protect Your Home from Invasion

While there is no sure-fire way to ensure your home will never be the target of a robbery, hi-jacking or intrusion, there are measures you can take to prevent, deter and catch criminals.

Doors

Doors are the primary entrance points for burglars. Garage doors are often the easiest to breach, followed by the back door. Once hidden from view a burglar has more breaking-and-entering options available to them. Follow these safety tips for a secure entrance:

Replace deteriorating door frames so thieves cannot pry the door off its hinges. Use heavy-duty strike plates in sturdy wooden door frames.

All entrance doors should have a solid core (preferably metal).

Use heavy-duty, quality deadbolt locks with a dead-latch mechanism.

Prevent fraudulent entry by installing door chains and wide-angle peepholes mounted.

Windows

Since windows can provide access for an intruder, it is essential that you take the proper measures to secure them. Particular attention must be paid to ground floor windows and windows visible from the street. Even upper floor windows can present a threat to your home, especially if they can be accessed via a stairway, tree, fence or by climbing on balconies. The following are some recommendations to secure your windows:

Use blocking devices to prevent an intruder from being able to slide a window open from the outside.

In bedrooms, any window blocking devices should be capable of being removed easily from the inside to ensure your safety in the vent of a fire.

Use anti-lift devices to prevent intruders from lifting your windows up vertically.

Installing burglar bars is a permanent and cost-effective solution to provide physical barriers to would-be intruders.

Alarm Systems

Alarm systems are most effective as a deterrent to burglars when used properly, and when properly maintained.

Keep your yard sign visible and put alarm company decals in your windows and doors.

Do not write your alarm code anywhere near the keypad.

Be sure to update your security company with any pertinent information including your response call list.

Test your alarm regularly to ensure all access to your property is protected.

Consider Active Security

While all the above-mentioned measures are passive forms of security, active security (such as motion sensor beams and emergency keypads linked to a 24 hour control room are a great solution to having backup on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Some major benefits of having a private security company on your side includes:

They have a superior knowledge of area security needs

Who knows the sort of dangers you confront better than somebody who lives and works in a similar territory? Mantis Security guards are extremely knowledgeable about the security issues homeowners and area businesses face and are in this way in the best position to offer an ideal security solution.

You can rely on better customer service

Local home security companies depend on their reputation to help them pull in new clients and keep them. This usually means you are probably going to get preferred treatment over using a large national firm. As a bonus, you can usually talk with local representatives instead of calling a long distance number and being rerouted to various offices.

Local alarm companies give quicker support

Should you encounter a need for repair, emergency response or service, Mantis Security offers 24 hours 7 days a week service support. Bigger organizations frequently have longer waiting times since they have just a couple of professionals that must be dispatched from some distance away. Local security companies have staff who can respond to issues rapidly, guaranteeing you experience as little of a downtime as possible.

It helps your economy and local community

Purchasing locally is useful for your local economy, and keeps a significant amount of dollars in your own community. Additionally, you are helping everyone around you get paying jobs – meaning more employed people, more security and a great contribution to the economy.

Active Vs Passive Security Solutions – Mantis Vision Stays Ahead Of The Times

Active Vs Passive Security Solutions

Active Vs Passive Security Solutions – Mantis Vision Stays Ahead Of The Times

Physical security has risen in technology and in its overall presence in a variety of industries. Valuable assets are always at risk of being a target, including information, goods, services, and – of course – people. A fully functional perimeter security system uses a variety of active and passive barriers to maximize the access control of the facility and ensure only appropriate parties are allowed to enter the property. Overall, one of the biggest and most challenging goals of developing a perimeter security system is maximizing the overall security of the facility without diminishing the efficiency, function, and even aesthetics of the area.

What is the Difference Between Active and Passive Security?

Active security can be categorised as a system which itself either reacts to an unwanted situation, or gives off a (typically) silent alarm to notify those responsible for reaction that something is amiss. A good example of an active security system would be a motion detector. This system picks up even the slightest of movements, and triggers an alarm to the control room. The monitored control room will then respond accordingly. Perhaps an even simpler way to explain an active security system is that it allows for immediate response, alerts and notifications.

A passive system – such as a non-monitored surveillance device is there mostly for record-keeping purposes. Think of a CCTV camera placed at the entrance to a residential complex. This will record the number-plates and capture a facial image of every person entering the complex. It does not alert security to any breaches, nor does it send silent signals. Rather, it keeps visual record of all parties which can be referred back to in a situation where an incident or breach of security has occurred.

Mantis Vision Active Security Solution

Mantis Vision – the division of Mantis Security which focuses on surveillance and detection – has not only developed an active security system – but rather a pro-active one.

Making use of state-of-the-art cameras and software, your home or office (or wherever you choose, really) is monitored every second of every day – and is linked directly to a manned, 24 hour control room. Video feeds are transmitted in real time – enabling the control room to be notified before the crime is committed.

Furthermore, we are not bound by certain geographical locations. The Mantis Vision system can be deployed nationally – making it ideal for multi-branch companies, holiday homes, gated communities, estates and stock yards.

Having Mantis Vision on your side is as easy as calling us: We will send a professional to inspect your premises and determine where smart cameras are to be installed. A series of questions will be asked relating to high risk and high traffic areas, together with your exact security concerns. Our team will then install and setup the surveillance system on your premises with surveillance starting immediately.

Mantis Security – Where We Began and Where We’re Headed

Mantis Security

Mantis Security – Where We Began and Where We’re Headed

Started in 1986 under the name R&M Security Services, Mark Kramer, along with his brother Raymond, were determined to challenge the ugly face of crime in a changing South Africa.

Mark Kramer was 23 years old at the time, fresh out of the SADF infantry where he served as a platoon commander.

Back then, there were no regulations and no minimum wages, but R&M knew that when their guards were treated with respect and paid fairly, their job performance would be better. Their first client was a friend in the plumbing business whose property was broken into. Through top-quality service and perseverance, R&M grew from one guarding contract to 30 others in lightning-fast speed, reaching into the residential, commercial and retail spheres.

In 1991 Mark Kramer suffered a terrible motorbike accident and decided to sell R&M. Whilst recovering, he wasted no time in bettering his security knowledge and skills. He went on Sabbatical, traveling to the Far East, USA and Israel, attending security lectures, seminars and conferences. It was here he realized that he was itching to get back into the industry he loved so much. He returned to South Africa and immediately, in 1992 established Mantis Security. Now over 25 years later, Mantis is still learning, engaging and adapting to its market, always striving to be the best of the best for its clients.

Mantis believes in building long lasting relationships and providing customer service above and beyond its competitors. Today, Mantis Security is rated one of the top security companies in South Africa and a pioneer in the security industry. With your support, Mantis intends on keeping it this way.

Mantis Security – Vision for The Future of Security in South Africa

Not only has Mantis already incorporated many aspects of security on South Africa which have not been met by existing security companies, but they have expanded into a new division – Mantis Vision. This division offers proactive guarding services using state-of-the-art cameras and software which detects unusual behaviour all day, every day.

Linked to a state of the art control room and highly trained personnel, Mantis Vision will contact the armed reaction partner of choice to inform them of any unusual sightings at your premises, business or residential. Clients are also notified of suspect events by means of a video clip sent to your cell phone or by email notifications.

How does Mantis vision work? A professional will inspect your premises and determine where smart cameras are to be installed. A series of questions will be asked relating to high risk and high traffic areas together with your exact security concerns. Our team will then install and setup the surveillance system on your premises with surveillance starting immediately.
